ATIS DVD

Okay, it's official: I LOVE THIS DVD! It's less like traveling into a molecule than traveling back in time. I have watched it dozens of times now, including once using a video projector and headphones to replicate the experience of the original ride as closely as possible, and I have to say that it may be the greatest fan-created item I've ever seen. My favorite used to be Starship Exeter, but I'll admit that was largely for the unintentional camp factor. The Adventure thru Inner Space Virtual Ride-thru certainly has its share of camp, (and even a queue that looks a wee bit like a set from Star Trek), but it's not campy on its own account; it's a dutiful re-creation of the camp inherent in the original ride.

And it looks cool as hell.

The DVD features an obsessively complete ride-through from the point-of-view of a rider, from the queue through the entire ride and even all the way past the Monsanto-sponsored displays at the exit. In the interest of accuracy, the ride portion even includes several amusing moments of total darkness.

Features include a soundtrack rebuilt from original source materials (in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound), an alternative angle "floating-camera" fly-through, and an image slide show. Somebody should alert the Internet Movie Database; Steve Buscemi makes a cameo appearance as the eyeball staring through the Mighty Microscope at the ride's conclusion.

Get it here.

Other interesting virtual re-creations: Virtual Toad and the exterior of Disney World's Haunted Mansion.
